British pubs warn of mass closures as energy crisis worsens

Pubs and breweries across Britain have been threatened with shutdown within months amid the rise in prices worth more than 300%, industry bosses have warned.

British pubs may have to close due to hefty rises of energy prices, industry leaders said on Tuesday, urging the government to intervene.

Greene King, JW Lees, Carlsberg Marston's, Admiral Taverns, Drake & Morgan and St Austell Brewery issued an open letter to the government urging it to extend the brand to enterprises throughout the country

The British Beer and Pub Association, an industry association, said rising energy prices caused by the rise in wholesale costs and supply shortages caused by the war in Ukraine could hurt the sector more than the pandemic unless action is taken.

The war in Ukraine has pushed up the price of fried delis due to higher tariffs on imports of white fish from Russia and diminished supplies of vegetable oil from the Ukraine.

Last week, the regulator Ofgem announced a hefty 80 per cent hike in gas and electricity prices for the average household from October, with even higher bills expected by January.
