Fifa Fifa World Cup 2022: David Beckham struck out on Thursday over a PR video where he praised "perfect" Qatar human rights activists; David Beckham on Thursday was criticised for a high- profile advertising campaign praising World Cup host Qatar as "perfect" despite concerns over its rights record.
Beckham signed a £150m deal last year in a bid to promote the gas-rich Gulf state to host the World Cup in November.
His relationship with Qatar is a source of concern for Amnesty International.
Critics say Qatar's progress over the last 10 years has been mixed, with more pressure to be put on the nation and Fifa before the first ball is kicked during the 32-nation tournament on November 20.
In the video campaign Beckham said the tiny state is really an unbelievable place to stop off for a couple of days and visit conservative Muslim leaders.
Beckham has attracted criticism on social media.
There are also questions over his respect for women's freedom and for the LGBTQ community.
Qatar disputes the migrant worker deaths reported by some international media, and said it has enacted a number of labor rules reforms since it was selected to host the World Cup.
