Furlough total in UK falls to new low as many go back to work after lock-down

A record number of workers still on the move in the UK fell to the lowest level since a pay support scheme started at the start of the coronavirus pandemic 18 months ago, according to official figures on Thursday.

HM Revenue and Customs said that approximately 340.000 people left over the month, which means fewer people are affected than at any other time since the pandemic began.

By the end of July, the first month that employers were forced to pay 10 per cent of their disgruntled workers "wages, the numbers had fallen by 330.000.

Nearly 12 million jobs have been created since it started 18 months ago.

July was the first month employers had to pay 10% of the wages of those laid off, providing an incentive to recall staff or leave.

In August and September, it had returned to 20%.
