Lake District overtakes Blackpool as the UK's best affordable staycation destination - RIFT research findings

Thursday, July 18, 2024

In a recent study by financial analysts RIFT, it was revealed that the Lake District has surpassed Blackpool as the most affordable staycation destination in the UK.

The cost analysis of eight popular tourist destinations, including accommodation, family day out, pint, and fish and chip supper, placed the Lake District at the top.

Blackpool, which previously held the title, dropped to third place due primarily to the high cost of a family day out at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

The price for a family visit to The World of Beatrix Potter in the Lake District has experienced a substantial decline, making it a desirable choice for those on a budget.

Dorset and Devon followed closely behind the Lake District, with the Cotswolds, Brighton, Peak District, and Cornwall rounding out the top eight.

RIFT's report highlighted that across the board, costs have risen year-on-year, with an average increase of 8% for a family day out and 3% for a pint.

Short-term rental accommodation, such as AirBnBs, averaged £194 per day, up from £146 last year, while the cost of fish and chip suppers increased by 4%.

In response to these findings, Bradley Post, MD of RIFT, emphasized the importance of proper planning for affordable vacations.

"With the economy recovering, we encourage travelers to support local businesses and the domestic tourism industry by spending their hard-earned money on staycations," Post stated.

The Lake District offers a perfect blend of affordability and natural beauty, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a value-for-money holiday.

The findings from RIFT's study serve as a reminder that carefully assessing the costs associated with different elements of a staycation is crucial for creating a memorable experience within budget constraints.
