Leading brands launch big new platform to tackle food waste

The retailer joined forces with Microsoft and technology companies BNSS and Team BTG to create Caboodle, which will allow convenience shops and restaurants to redistribute excess food.

The goal is to create a single location where food distributors and food businesses from across the hospitality sector can work with volunteers and community groups in all cities, towns and villages across the UK to help share food when and where it is needed.

In the UK now about 4 billion pounds of food, which is 1.1 million metric tons, is lost each year in supermarkets, manufacturers, restaurants, cafés and similar establishments.

Although the entire food surplus tripled between 2015 and 20201, there are still 200.000 tons that could have been redeployed but could not be redistributed.
