British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) is to open 20 new stores and shed 3.400 jobs across the UK, the Times has reported.
"Stores are a core part of M&S's omni-channel future and serve as a competitive advantage for how customers want to shop today," - Stuart Machin
Marks & Spencer is to step up its store opening scheme by launching 20 "bigger and better" new stores across Britain, and creating 3.400 jobs.
The Group suggested last November a target to reduce its full range suppliers.
It has about 247 full-range suppliers, but intends to reduce this number to 180 by the beginning of 2026, to close 67 "less-creative full-range shops," while opening more than 100 new food stores.
"Fits into the levelling-up agenda, with the creation of jobs across the whole of the UK." - Stuart Machin.
Chairman Stuart Machin told the newspaper that the investment in the stores 'fits into the levelling-up agenda, with the creation of jobs across the whole of the UK.'.
M & S, founded in 1884, has more than 1.000 stores in the UK and has been led since last summer by Machin, 52, and Katie Bickerstaffe, 55, its co-managing directors.
