Offices, restaurant, food market: Hammerson outlines grand vision for old John Lewis

Wednesday, January 18, 2023

As part of the refurbish of Birmingham's former John Lewis department store, a new restaurant, grocery store, gymnasium and offices are currently being planned.

Thus, the atrium will span all four floors of the building, and will include a vast open common entrance that will expand during the ascent, establishing a visual link between the rooms and letting the daylight through the centre of the room.

Furthermore, each level will feature a roof garden and green walls.

"This project is the next step in Hammerson's vision to transform our Birmingham estate, creating a truly multi-use asset that thrives due to its relevance and diversity," - Harry Badham.

The workplace is expected to seats up to 2.000 people and will be the best-connected office in Birmingham, with unrivalled rail, tramway access plus superb cycling and walking access and the integration into Hammerson's wider Bullring Estate.

Founding partner Ken Shuttleworth said: 'We've been creatively considering how we rethink big box retail within city centres to ensure we can enliven these key spaces and draw people back into the workplace by prioritising wellbeing and dynamism. We've applied this here so the design for Drum goes beyond a traditional workspace in every sense.
