Scottish region named one of the top destinations in world by travel bible Lonely Planet for 2023

The South of Scotland as named by a travel website as one of the best places on the planet.

Lonely Planet publishes its "Best in Travel" list on a yearly basis recommending spots around the globe in different categories.

The Scottish destination is rated 'learning' and ranks as one of the world's hotspots, with El Salvador and Marseille also included.

Organisers say the region's history and culture make it the perfect place to immerse yourself in the past as well as discover more about iconic characters such as Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.

Malcolm Roughead, VisitScotland's general manager, said: "To be included in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2023 guide is a fantastic accolade for the South of Scotland and will help provide a welcome boost to the recovery of our valuable tourism industry by connecting with visitors from across the world and encourage them to explore the region more widely."
