UK spending rises as consumers react to return of travel and eat out

Spending on UK credit and debit cards was 106% higher in the week ending 6 May than they were during February 2020, compared with the previous week when consumers spent more on travel, food and other activities exempt from coronavirus rules.
Other figures released on Thursday showed a net 7% of the 34.940 companies polled by the Office for National Statistics actually experienced an increase in sales in March, compared with March.
Service is due to be resumed on Monday, a major boost for the sector which was hard hit by the pandemic and government lockouts, and could have many customers affected at some point in their lives.
Online jobs ads jumped to 103% of their February 2020 levels, an increase of 46 points compared to the beginning of April, also just before the partial reopening of the hotel and restaurant sector.
